Oakville Escape

A Private Resort-Like Escape in Oakville

About the Project

This house started off as a typical back split. Square footage was added by building two bedrooms, a bathroom and a large landing above the garage. The new second floor roof height was extended over the existing family room which was open to the new landing, giving the feeling of a large mezzanine. The new second floor was also extended into the back yard creating an overhang that a covered outdoor living space was built into.

To compensate for the larger living space a new furnace and air conditioner were installed. Radiant heat flooring was also added to the kitchen and bathrooms.

New custom kitchen cabinets and countertops were installed along with flooring and appliances. All the windows were replaced, new floors were laid throughout the house. All the lighting and blinds were automated for ultimate household control.

Outside, stucco was installed on all walls with  flagstone to accent. A new custom wood deck surrounding a hot tub  and 3,500 square feet of flagstone patio gives the home owners year round access to their own private retreat.

Our Challenges

There were existing stones used as accents around the exterior of the house that needed to be matched on the second floor addition. We were able to source identical stones from the same quarry the existing stones came from

To accommodate a 3,000 pound pool table, the family room floor had to be reinforced.

Our Approach and Solution

During consultations with our client we found out they really liked interested lighting and how it interacted with surfaces in their home. We were able to come up with some really playful and sleek solutions for them like hidden lighting in the privacy fences around the hot tub that made the walls appear to glow. We also designed and built floating shelves using low iron ultra clear glass and lights installed in the wall cavity that appear to light up and cast intriguing patterns on a stone wall in the living room. We used the same shelving idea in the bedroom and combined it with in floor lighting to create some captivating effects.

We supplemented the traditional heating from the furnace with a system that transferred heat from the fireplace to the central HVAC system to spread the the head from the fireplace all throughout the house.

Sensors and timers were used around the house to automate the lighting and window coverings to automatically react to external stimuli and keep the homeowners as comfortable as possible without.
